RP Leader’s new communication campaign against Gender-based Violence

From an analysis of how the issue of violence against women is perceived and the attention paid to it, we have noticed that, in the majority of cases, violence is only discussed when it results in a femicide.

And when faced with such a case, society is shaken by it only for the brief moment it takes to scroll past the news.

Normalisation, inurement and indifference are the most widespread sentiments.

People think that there is nothing we can do about it anyway, that responsibility lies solely with the police, the judiciary, the law and, ultimately, the victims themselves.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Responsibility is a cultural issue and concerns everyone.

The issue of violence doesn’t sell, it doesn’t grab people’s attention, nobody cares… #UntilItHappensToYou

Our campaign stems from the need to raise awareness and to speak out against injuries whether minor or serious, psychological trauma, isolation, exclusion from the labour market, judgement, prejudice, stereotypes and indifference.

We have chosen a very strong expression, which is certainly not a wish.

But the sad reality is that we do not really grasp the problem, because it is easier to think of it as something so far removed from us that it could never affect us personally.

And, sometimes, it does not even affect us when it happens to someone close to us.

Have you ever wondered what becomes of the women who have come forward?

    The so-called ‘survivors’.

What are their lives like? What do they need?

    How can we support them?

Reporting is only the beginning. The road ahead is an uphill struggle.

There are so many ways to show solidarity; you don’t need to be a member of an organisation or an expert in the field.

Listening is one of them. Listening without judgement.

Often, when a woman who has been a victim of violence wants to talk about what happened, she notices a sense of discomfort, a desire to brush the subject aside, accompanied by the usual phrase: ‘Oh well, it’s in the past now, isn’t it?! You’re fine now.’

Fine?! Of course she doesn’t talk about it every day, but every day she has to live with the invisible effects of the violence.

If you haven’t experienced it, you won’t understand it… #UntilItHappensToYou
